# Why are step and distance metrics empty for WHOOP?

WHOOP devices have **no step counter**, so step and walking-distance metrics are never produced and those fields are always empty for WHOOP-connected users. This is a WHOOP-side limitation, not a permissions setting or data-handling issue, and there is nothing to enable.

Other WHOOP behaviours:

* WHOOP exposes only aggregate sleep-stage totals (light, deep, REM, awake), not per-interval `hypnogram_samples`, so that array is always empty.
* WHOOP does report distance for individual GPS-tracked workouts (e.g. outdoor runs and rides) in the activity payload's `distance` field.

For steps and daily distance, **add a provider with a step counter or phone tracking**, such as Apple Health, Health Connect/Google Fit, Fitbit, or Garmin. See the [WHOOP docs](https://docs.tryterra.co/health-and-fitness-api/whoop) for more.
